But have you wondered why guinea pigs as a species are called guinea pig? They\u2019re also often called cavies. The reason behind one of these names is simple, but the other is more complicated and still being debated. It\u2019s time to explore the origins of the names guinea pig and cavy.<\/p>\n

Guinea Pig Origins<\/h2>\n

The origin story for pet guinea pigs begins in South America. It\u2019s believed that people domesticated guinea pigs about 3,000 years ago around areas of the Andes Mountains, specifically those that include present-day Peru, Bolivia, and other countries. Guinea pigs were raised mainly as livestock. In Peru, guinea pigs are now called cuy. This background sets the stage for naming.<\/p>\n

That Guinea Pig Name<\/h2>\n

Their origination in South America might explain the guinea part of their name. Guinea pigs likely were brought to Europe by Spanish explorers in the 1500s.
