Lovebird diet conversion

Hi, My lovebird, Luxa, (4 months old) is being really stubborn when it comes to conversion. I have been mixing in Top’s in with her seed mix, but she still is ignoring it, and only eating the seeds, which means she also has less energy for training. She is extremely food motivated, and I was planning on doing birdy-bread, but she won’t eat anything that doesn’t look like seeds! How should I go about fixing her diet, so that she is more healthy in the long run, and has more energy now?

Answer:

Hi Gabrielle,

Luxa doesn’t need to eat pellets in order to have a better diet. Our Nutri-Berries and Avi-Cakes are nutritionally balanced the same as a pellet, but they are not ground up. All pellets start as seeds and grains, with other ingredients added to balance the nutrition, then all of ground up to make a pellet. Luxa will likely easily convert to Nutri-Berries since they contain the whole seeds that she prefers. Generally you can start by crumbling the berries with her seed mix, and gradually reduce the mount of loose seed each day, until she is just eating the Nutri-Berries. Once she is eating them well, you can start to offer them whole. She can have as many as she wants each day, as long as she is eating most of each berry without wasting too much. She will need anywhere from 6-12 daily, depending on her activity and metabolism. Here is a link to our feeding guide for more information.
