Parrotlets

Hi there,

I am looking to buy a parrotlet, and I have found a breeder who has a Celestial Green, which is just what I want. He is now 6/7 weeks old, but because of a holiday already booked, I will be bringing him home at 13/14 weeks old – is that a good age? I want him to become as tame as possible!

Many thanks.

Answer:

Hi Anne,

The tameness will depend on if he was hand fed and if the breeder will continue to handle him and socialize him until you can pick him up. I would never recommend a parrotlet that was not hand fed or at least co-parented, where the parents feed but the breeder handles the chicks regularly to tame them before they are weaned. Parrotlets are a small parrot with a huge personality. Much like small dog breeds, they can be a bit fierce and can be more likely to bite than the larger parrots. So don’t be fooled by the size – they can be awesome pets, but you need to know what you are getting into. Make sure the breeder will be handling the baby regularly and make sure you can handle it before you take it home. Any hand fed bird can revert to being wild in a very short time if handling stops as soon as it is weaned. I hope this all works out and you have your sweet baby home soon!

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
