A definite chill is in air\u00a0\u2014 temperatures are estimated to be as low as 40 degrees\u00a0below zero<\/i>\u00a0this week in the Midwest. In fact, Chicago and other cities will be colder than parts of Antarctica, Alaska, and the North Pole!<\/p>\n

In these weather extremes, staying warm indoors is a must, and we must make sure we take our pet birds into consideration when seeking relief from the cold so that everyone can be safe and comfortable at home.<\/p>\n

Keep The Warm Air In<\/h3>\n

If your bird is accustomed to a room with a view, he\/she might have to forgo watching the great outdoors until the weather warms up. Home experts recommend closing the curtains and blinds to keep heat from escaping through the window. And locking windows can further seal out cold air. Offer your bird something else to gaze upon in the interim\u00a0\u2014 draw or paint a picture for your bird to admire (or scrutinize!) or let him\/her watch an animated feature or nature documentary on TV.<\/p>\n

Another trick from home designers is to reverse the direction of ceiling fans, so that the blades turn clockwise and circulate warm air from the ceiling area down into the room. Keep in mind that having a bird in the home, even one with a winger-feather trim, means being extra diligent in making sure your bird doesn\u2019t collide with a ceiling fan while it is in use. When faced with frigid weather, experts recommend having an alternative heat source other than using a home\u2019s electric heater in case the heater goes out. From space heaters, oil heaters, to traditional furnaces, make sure the heat source you use is bird-safe. Staying warm can also mean offering a little more food than usual, because the cold makes us burn calories faster. Opt for healthy selections<\/a>\u00a0, and keep in mind that this is also a good time to up your bird\u2019s Omega 3 fatty acids<\/a> food intake. Omega 3 fatty acids<\/a> are important for immune health as well as cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health.<\/p>\n

Take Advantage Of The Downtime<\/h3>\n

If the weather is severe enough in your area, you\u2019re likely not going anywhere until the polar vortex blows over. Make the most of this extra downtime by playing and interacting with your bird. Enjoy a karaoke morning; a lunch date with your bird (share healthy foods like whole-wheat pasta, blueberries, quinoa, etc.); or create a foraging playground<\/a> for your bird.<\/p>\n

Her journey in the bird world has taken her to the remote areas of Brazil to see hyacinth macaws in their native habitat, as well as on bird-watching trips to Spain, Puerto Rico and Mexico. She is especially thankful to have met so many passionate pet bird owners throughout her years at the helm of Bird Talk magazine. Her interest in pet birds started at the age of 9, when she saved up her penny collection to buy Elvis, her cockatiel companion of 22 years. Little did she know then that her love of birds would some day lead to a career in which being chased by a cockatoo during a photo-shoot, having a 5-minute phone conversation with a reader\u2019s African grey parrot, hand-wrestling a caique to get her pilfered ring back and having her work desk \u201cre-decorated\u201d by a visiting Amazon parrot were all just another day at the office.
