{"id":27753,"date":"2020-02-05T20:00:56","date_gmt":"2020-02-06T02:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/pet-birds\/?p=27753"},"modified":"2025-08-28T19:23:36","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T00:23:36","slug":"the-parakeet-rangers-of-guyana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/pet-birds\/the-parakeet-rangers-of-guyana\/","title":{"rendered":"The Parakeet Rangers Of Guyana"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_27758\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27758\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-27758 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/pet-birds\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/safe_image.jpg\" alt=\"sun conures\" width=\"540\" height=\"281\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27758\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Courtesy of LoraKim Joyner, DVM, MPVM, M.Div<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the end of 2019, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oneearthconservation.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">One Earth Conservation<\/a> finished seven days of surveying the endangered sun parakeet (<em>Aratinga solstitialis<\/em>), also referred to as the<a href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/pet-birds\/species\/sun-conure\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> sun conure<\/span><\/a>, in the Karasabai Village. I had joined up with the parakeet rangers of this region to determine how many sun parakeets there actually were. A full survey had never been undertaken before, and for good reason. To cover the entire area means a lot of hiking, hammock camping, and getting around by boats, All Terrain Vehicles, bikes, motorcycles, and trucks.<\/p>\n<p>This amazing group of rangers was up for it. We were spread thin over a large area, but we learned a lot more about this species than we knew before: where they roost (in communal or family cavities), where they nest, and where they forage. We were grateful to realize that there were more of them than the 200 we had thought previously existed. And there were juveniles accompanying the adults, meaning that the work of these rangers and this village is bearing fruit, or rather, parrots. The work of conservation is a work of peace. Though it feels like war at times due to the overwhelming challenges and frequent threats and actualities of violence, we must live and breathe peace in all we do. There is no ultimate liberation unless we change the dominating culture where others are systematically oppressed and societal and environmental violence is heaped upon them.<\/p>\n<p><em>We must be the change we wish.<br \/>\nWe must be the peace we long for.<br \/>\nWe must protect and liberate ourselves and others.<br \/>\nLet us sing. We are the peaceful rangers!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We change, protect, liberate, and sing so that we can feel welcome on this planet, and so that we are welcoming to the man others to Earth, our sweet home.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One Earth Conservation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization co-founded by Dr. LoraKim Joyner, who has worked in parrot conservation for over three decades. Since an early age she always had birds in the home, out in the pigeon coop, or eating at the yard feeder. Her hope for avian flourishing led her to a BS in Avian Sciences and then later to a DVM where she specialized in birds. A later Masters in Preventive Veterinary Medicine emphasized avian research. Hearing birds call to her heart, she worked in other countries as a consultant in avian medicine and conservation, with an emphasis on parrot conservation. Her hopes for the birds led her to the Philippines, Panama, Costa Rica, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Guatemala where she lived for several years. Her work with birds has also included working as a Clinical Instructor and Research Assistant Professor at the Nondomestic Avian Clinic at the College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina State University. There she later served as the Community Advocate, where she taught ethics and grief management as well as assisted staff, faculty, and clients in dealing with grief and ethical issues. Seeing the need to address human well-being, LoraKim obtained a M.Div degree, was ordained a Unitarian Universalist minister, and became a Certified Trainer in Nonviolent Communication. She served in parish ministry for 10 years and now is a community minister emphasizing Multispecies Ministry and Nonviolent Communication. She celebrates with joy her position at One Earth Conservation and Ministry where she can support birds and people around the world make life-giving connections. Since an early age she always had birds in the home, out in the pigeon coop, or eating at the yard feeder. Her hope for avian flourishing led her to a BS in Avian Sciences and then later to a DVM where she specialized in birds. A later Masters in Preventive Veterinary Medicine emphasized avian research. Hearing birds call to her heart, she worked in other countries as a consultant in avian medicine and conservation, with an emphasis on parrot conservation. Her hopes for the birds led her to the Philippines, Panama, Costa Rica, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Guatemala where she lived for several years. Her work with birds has also included working as a Clinical Instructor and Research Assistant Professor at the Nondomestic Avian Clinic at the College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina State University. There she later served as the Community Advocate, where she taught ethics and grief management as well as assisted staff, faculty, and clients in dealing with grief and ethical issues. Seeing the need to address human well-being, LoraKim obtained a M.Div degree, was ordained a Unitarian Universalist minister, and became a Certified Trainer in Nonviolent Communication. She served in parish ministry for 10 years and now is a community minister emphasizing Multispecies Ministry and Nonviolent Communication. She celebrates with joy her position at One Earth Conservation and Ministry where she can support birds and people around the world make life-giving connections.
