Since 2010, One Earth Conservation<\/a> has been collaborating with the indigenous people of La Moskitia, Honduras in an effort to protect their native macaws and their nesting sites. The good news is over 1,000 nests have been protected from poaching, and hundreds of birds have been returned to the wild.\u00a0 The not-so-good news, about 20% of the nests continue to be poached even as the community improves its ability to protect the birds by constant patrolling and vigilance.<\/p>\n

La Moskitia is the second-largest forest in Mesoamerica. It is the forest shared between Honduras and Nicaragua. There is significant biological diversity in La Moskitia, including parrots like the scarlet macaw (Ara macao)<\/em> and the great green macaw (Ara ambiguus). <\/em>Several indigenous groups inhabit this remote area. But La Moskitia faces the usual conservation challenges such as cattle ranching, illegal trafficking of flora and fauna, and illegal land grabs.<\/p>\n

Every Nest Counts<\/h3>\n

Dr. LoraKim Joyner from One Earth Conservation has worked with the La Moskitia villagers for over 15 years. In March and April, she plans to stand in solidarity with them by camping under the trees to keep vigilance over the birds and their nests. \u00a0But there is never enough help, not only through public awareness, but also for additional people to help patrol during a time when the birds are most vulnerable.<\/p>\n

From March through August this year, there are plans for a major campaign to bring awareness to the plight of this area and its threatened parrots. This will include public demonstrations, a report to provide updates on nest activity and bird sightings, online Facebook and Zoom meetings where you can talk with indigenous conservationists, and more exploration of the themes of Unconditional Solidarity and Transformative Conservation.<\/p>\n

One Earth Conservation and the villagers cannot do this alone. This month\u2019s Lafeber donation goes to pay for some additional patrollers to help protect the parrots and their nests during this year\u2019s breeding season. As Dr. Joyner says: \u201cConsider taking risks as these people have, because everything is at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n

She realized that Phoenix should outlive her, and wanted to make sure there was a reliable adoption apparatus in place to ensure that Phoenix has a place to \u201cland.\u201d So she retired from her senior federal position to volunteer full-time with Phoenix Landing, which turned 25 years old in April 2025. By 2025, Phoenix Landing had rehomed more than 3,500 birds. Some of these have even required more than one home because people\u2019s lives often change. Adoption is a positive, not a negative, way to acquire a deserving bird. Phoenix Landing believes that parrots need to be protected across their long lives and probable multiple homes. Ann believes that adoption is inevitable and organizations that provide life-long protection for individual birds is essential. Her passion is nutrition and she wrote the \u201cNourish to Flourish\u201d cookbook. She is a huge fan of the quality products offered by Lafeber. Ann also organizes an annual Phoenix Landing eco-tour to support wild parrot conservation and research. That interest led to this Lafeber series, called \u201cThe Global Parrot.\u201d She hopes others will also support the many dedicated scientists who are working so hard to preserve the parrots species we love and value so much. Ann has lived with birds for over 35 years. Phoenix, her greenwing macaw, is the inspiration behind Phoenix Landing. Most birds need a succession of good homes, through no fault of their own. She realized that Phoenix should outlive her, and wanted to make sure there was a reliable adoption apparatus in place to ensure that Phoenix has a place to \u201cland.\u201d So she retired from her senior federal position to volunteer full-time with Phoenix Landing, which turned 25 years old in April 2025. By 2025, Phoenix Landing had rehomed more than 3,500 birds. Some of these have even required more than one home because people\u2019s lives often change. Adoption is a positive, not a negative, way to acquire a deserving bird. Phoenix Landing believes that parrots need to be protected across their long lives and probable multiple homes. Ann believes that adoption is inevitable and organizations that provide life-long protection for individual birds is essential.
