Rescued African grey parrots rest in a rehabilitation aviary as they recover and prepare for the next chapter of their journey. Localized veterinary care is helping more of these intelligent birds survive and heal.

Every year, hundreds of African grey parrots are rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. While getting them out of the hands of traffickers is a major win, the reality that follows is tough. Many birds arrive at rescue centers severely weakened by stress, malnutrition, injury, and disease. Sadly, some don’t make it, and without advanced medical tools, it is often impossible to know why.<\/p>\n

To change this, the World Parrot Trust (WPT) is stepping in to build a lasting veterinary capacity on the ground where it is needed most.<\/p>\n

Advancing Diagnostics for Seized Greys<\/h3>\n

WPT\u2019s Mobile Veterinary Unit is partnering with Fabien Murhula Bakenga, an avian medicine Master\u2019s student at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria. Alongside Dr. Steven Janssen and local rescue centers, Fabien is investigating recent deaths among seized parrots in Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Together, they are:<\/p>\n

  • Improving post-mortem procedures<\/strong> to accurately find the cause of death<\/li>\n
  • Upgrading sample collection<\/strong> so local and regional labs can successfully analyze diseases<\/li>\n
  • Evaluating practical diagnostic tools<\/strong> that rescue centers might be able to sustain long-term<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Science is only half the battle; everyday care matters just as much. WPT staff are on the ground providing hands-on mentoring to the local animal-care teams. The training focuses on:<\/p>\n

    • Biosecurity & disease recognition<\/strong> to stop outbreaks before they start<\/li>\n
    • Advanced animal care<\/strong> to give fragile, newly rescued birds the best immediate chance at survival<\/li>\n
    • Proper sample handling<\/strong> so the frontline staff feel confident investigating health threats independently<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      This initiative isn’t a temporary patch but rather an investment in the future. By supporting scientists like Fabien, the project ensures that advanced knowledge in avian medicine stays within the region to guide future wildlife rehabilitation programs.<\/p>\n

      By better understanding the diseases targeting trafficked birds, rescue centers can lower mortality rates, respond faster to large-scale confiscations, and ensure more of these remarkable parrots get the second chance they deserve – returning to the wild forests where they belong. This important work is safeguarding the future of the African grey parrot, which continues to be under siege through poaching and illegal trafficking.<\/p>\n

She realized that Phoenix should outlive her, and wanted to make sure there was a reliable adoption apparatus in place to ensure that Phoenix has a place to \u201cland.\u201d So she retired from her senior federal position to volunteer full-time with Phoenix Landing, which turned 25 years old in April 2025. By 2025, Phoenix Landing had rehomed more than 3,500 birds. Some of these have even required more than one home because people\u2019s lives often change. Adoption is a positive, not a negative, way to acquire a deserving bird. Phoenix Landing believes that parrots need to be protected across their long lives and probable multiple homes. Ann believes that adoption is inevitable and organizations that provide life-long protection for individual birds is essential. Ann has lived with birds for over 35 years. Phoenix, her greenwing macaw, is the inspiration behind Phoenix Landing. Most birds need a succession of good homes, through no fault of their own. She realized that Phoenix should outlive her, and wanted to make sure there was a reliable adoption apparatus in place to ensure that Phoenix has a place to \u201cland.\u201d So she retired from her senior federal position to volunteer full-time with Phoenix Landing, which turned 25 years old in April 2025. By 2025, Phoenix Landing had rehomed more than 3,500 birds. Some of these have even required more than one home because people\u2019s lives often change. Adoption is a positive, not a negative, way to acquire a deserving bird. Phoenix Landing believes that parrots need to be protected across their long lives and probable multiple homes. Ann believes that adoption is inevitable and organizations that provide life-long protection for individual birds is essential.
