Dr. Kevin Michael Wright<\/strong> passed away at the age of 50 after a brief illness on Friday, September 27, 2013.<\/p><\/div>\n

Remembering a distinguished career<\/h2>\n

Kevin Wright earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Florida. He worked in private practice before completing a residency in zoological medicine at the Philadelphia Zoo and the University of Pennsylvania\u2019s School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Wright then served as the veterinarian and curator for the amphibian and reptile collection at the Philadelphia Zoo. In 1999, he went to work for The Phoenix Zoo, but returned to private practice in 2005 co-founding an exotic animal hospital. In 2012 he founded his own exotic pet mobile practice.<\/p>\n

An original member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians, Dr. Wright was named the Exotic DVM of the Year in 2008. In both 2009 and 2012 he was awarded Exotics Speaker of the Year by the North American Veterinary Conference. In the first year this specialty was offered (2010), he became a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in Reptile and Amphibian Practice. Dr. Wright was the co-author of the highly respected text, Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry<\/em>, and the author of more than 150 articles related to zoological medicine for both professional and lay audiences.<\/p>\n

Dr. Kevin Wright Memorial Fund<\/h2>\n

In a Facebook<\/a> post dated October 5, 2013, his brother, Don Wright wrote:<\/p>\n

As many of you know, my brother Kevin passed away after a brief illness on September 26, 2013. Our family is heartbroken and numb by the loss, but our attention is focused on helping Marlene through this extremely difficult time. Not only did she lose her beloved husband and life partner of 23 years, but she also lost her employer.<\/em><\/p>\n

Although Kevin\u2019s veterinary house call business was growing, many of you also know he was unable to acquire health or life insurance. In order to help Marlene with expenses, we have set up a memorial fund in Kevin\u2019s honor to receive monetary gifts. All funds will be used to pay off final expenses and any excess will be used for living expenses to support Marlene until she can re-enter the workforce\u2026We intend to donate a portion of the proceeds to organizations that represent Kevin\u2019s varied passions including local animal rescues and others committed to preservation of native wildlife around the world.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n\n
