This species was also introduced into Turkey. Its natural habitat consists of dry scrub, woodland, and hillsides.<br \/>\n<\/div><div class=\"ezcol-divider\"><\/div><br \/>\n<div class=\"ezcol ezcol-one-third\"><\/p>\n<h2>Conservation status<\/h2>\n<p><\/div><br \/>\n<div class=\"ezcol ezcol-two-third ezcol-last\"><br \/>\nThe marginated tortoise is listed on CITES Appendix 2 and its conservation status is listed as \u201cleast concern\u201d by the International Union on Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Most animals in the pet trade come from captive breeding.<br \/>\n<\/div><div class=\"ezcol-divider\"><\/div><br \/>\n<div class=\"ezcol ezcol-one-third\"><\/p>\n<h2>Taxonomy<\/h2>\n<p><\/div><br \/>\n<div class=\"ezcol ezcol-two-third ezcol-last\"><br \/>\n<strong>Class<\/strong>: <em>Reptilia<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Order<\/strong>: <em>Chelonia\/Testudines<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><strong>Family<\/strong>: <em>Testudinidae<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\"><strong>Genus<\/strong>: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/basic-information-sheet-mediterranean-tortoises\">Testudo<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><em>Testudo marginata<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 150px;\"><em>Testudo marginata marginata<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 150px;\"><em>Testudo marginata sarda<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Depending on the source, <em>Testudo weissingeri<\/em> is classified as either a separate species of genus Testudo or a subspecies of the marginated tortoise.<\/p>\n<p><\/div><div class=\"ezcol-divider\"><\/div><br \/>\n<div class=\"ezcol ezcol-one-third\"><\/p>\n<h2>Physical description<\/h2>\n<p><\/div><br \/>\n<div class=\"ezcol ezcol-two-third ezcol-last\"><br \/>\n<em>Testudo marginata<\/em> is the largest species in the <em>Testudo<\/em> genus. Adults range from 25-40 cm (10-15.7 in) in length and weigh up to 5 kg.<\/p>\n<p><em>Testudo marginata<\/em> and <em>Testudo weissingeri<\/em> have similar identifying features, and <em>T. weissingeri<\/em> was originally considered a dwarf population of <em>Testudo marginata<\/em>. The shell length of <em>T. weissingeri<\/em> is normally less than 21.5 cm (8.5 in).\u00a0<em>Testudo weissingeri<\/em> can also be visually distinguished from <em>Testudo marginata<\/em> by <a href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/understanding-the-chelonian-shell\/#Shell_vocabulary_terms\">carapace<\/a> coloration.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Carapace coloration in <em>T. weissingeri<\/em> is dull brown or blackish, with greyish-yellow or horn-collared patches flecked with grey.<\/li>\n<li><em>Testudo marginata<\/em> possess a more contrasting pattern of\u00a0 pale yellow on black.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Marginated tortoises possess an oblong, domed shell. The supracaudal and posterior marginal scutes are prominently flared and \u201csaw-like\u201d. There are also four or five longitudinal rows of enlarged scales on the anterior surface of the foreleg. <strong>Usually<\/strong> there are no spurs on the tail or thighs.<br \/>\n<\/div><div class=\"ezcol-divider\"><\/div><br \/>\n<div class=\"ezcol ezcol-one-third\"><\/p>\n<h2>Diet<\/h2>\n<p><\/div><br \/>\n<div class=\"ezcol ezcol-two-third ezcol-last\"><br \/>\nThe free-ranging marginated tortoise is herbivorous, consuming primarily grasses, flowers, and some fruits. The majority of the captive diet should consist of greens, grasses, and flowers, some vegetables and small amounts of fruit. The nighttime temperature should fall no lower than 18\u00b0C (64.4\u00b0F).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Lighting<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>Artificial UVB lighting is recommended for captive specimens. Most <em>Testudo marginata<\/em> are quite hardy and will cope outdoors in well-drained herbaceous areas that are protected and enclosed.
