This checklist is divided into three safety categories: induction of anesthesia, before the skin incision, and before the patient leaves the operating room.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23603\" src=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/wp-content\/uploads\/history-taking1.jpg\" alt=\"Surgical Safety Checklist\" width=\"258\" height=\"183\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Evaluation of the patient before anesthetic induction includes the patient\u2019s physical status classification system, initially created by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asahq.org\/resources\/clinical-information\/asa-physical-status-classification-system\" target=\"_blank\">American Society of Anesthesiologists<\/a> (ASA). This grading system is used for record keeping, communications between colleagues, and to create uniformity for statistical analysis. The grading system is not intended for use as a measure to predict operative risk:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ASA 1. Healthy patient<\/li>\n<li>ASA 2. Mild systemic disease<\/li>\n<li>ASA 3. Severe systemic disease<\/li>\n<li>ASA 4. Severe systemic disease considered a constant threat to life<\/li>\n<li>ASA 5.
