When consulting textbooks for help, often a dizzying array of waterfowl diseases are encountered. Some conditions such as &#8220;angel wing&#8221; and predator trauma are important in captive populations, while infectious diseases like fowl cholera can cause massive die-offs in free-ranging birds. These abbreviated lists should in no way replace professional judgment when evaluating your patient. This &#8220;cheat sheet&#8221; is merely designed as an aide or reminder system and should never be used for diagnostic decision-making. Fowl Cholera or Avian Cholera<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Fowl cholera, or disease caused by <em>Pasteurella multocida<\/em>, has been reported in many bird species and occurs primarily in free-ranging populations. Dramatic outbreaks, sometimes killing thousands of birds, are reported annually in North America. Although losses can occur any time of the year, outbreaks typically occur during the winter or spring in northern California, Oregon, Nebraska, as well as the Texas panhandle.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nBacteria are shed in feces and bodily secretions such as oculonasal discharge and oral discharge. Infection is transmitted by ingestion of contaminated food and water, inhalation, or less commonly inoculation of feet by contaminated debris.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nIn the acute form of disease, some birds may be found dead. Clinical signs can also include:   <br \/>\n<ul><br \/>\n<li>Fluffed and ruffled feathers<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Mucoid discharge from the eyes, mouth, and vent<\/li> <br \/>\n<li>Pasty yellow or blood stained diarrhea<\/li> <br \/>\n<li>Tachypnea<\/li><br \/>\n<\/ul><br \/>\nDeath rapidly follows the onset of clinical signs with birds frequently dying within <br \/>\n6 to 12 hours.<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<br \/>\nChronic fowl cholera can follow an acute outbreak or may arise from a less virulent strain. Clinical signs vary and are related to focal disease like septic arthritis, sinusitis, or respiratory infection. Chronically infected, free-flying birds are the likely source of infection for captive poultry and waterfowl.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe classic <a href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/a-guide-to-avian-necropsy\/\">necropsy<\/a> finding for the acute form of disease is a bird in good flesh with abundant fat reserves. <br \/>\n<ul><br \/>\n<li>Petechial and ecchmyotic hemorrhages are often found on the heart or in the coronary groove<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Hemorrhages may also be present in the ventriculus, lungs, abdominal fat, and intestinal mucosa<\/li> <br \/>\n<li>The liver may be swollen and friable with multifocal areas of necrosis<\/li> <br \/>\n<li>The distal gastrointestinal tract may contain thick, yellow or bloody fluid laden with <em>P. multocida<\/em><\/li><br \/>\n<\/ul><br \/>\nChronic fowl cholera lesions usually involve focal infections with caseous exudate.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nImportant differential diagnoses include duck virus enteritis, erysipelas, <em>E. coli<\/em> and other bacteremias. Diagnosis relies upon consistent clinical signs, gross necropsy findings, and culture of <em>P. multocida<\/em> from intestinal fluid or bone marrow. Wright\u2019s stain can also be used to demonstrate bipolar rods in heart blood or liver impression smears.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nAntimicrobials commonly used against <em>P. multocida<\/em> include beta-lactam antibiotics, oxytetracycline (50 mg IM followed by 500 g\/ton feed x 30d), or enrofloxacin (5 mg\/kg PO, IM, SC q12h). Management of disease also relies upon prompt removal and incineration of carcasses as well as cleaning the environment. <br \/>\n<br \/>\n<em>Pasteurella multocida<\/em> can live in the environment for up to 3 months, however the organism is easily destroyed by common disinfectants, sunlight, drying, and heat. Therefore good sanitation practices are an important part of disease prevention and control. Additional helpful measures include:<br \/>\n<ul><br \/>\n<li>Eliminate carrier birds<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Maintain closed flocks<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Avoid mixing bird species <\/li><br \/>\n<\/ul><br \/>\nA bacterin is available for valuable flocks with persistent problems.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-81 from cache --><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"duckplague\"><\/a><br \/>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-82\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-82\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<th class=\"column-1\">Box 2. Duck Plague or Duck Virus Enteritis (DVE)<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Duck plague is an important, acutely contagious viral disease affecting ducks, geese, and <br \/>\nswans. The etiologic agent is an alpha-herpesvirus. Duck plague was first documented in the United States in Pekin ducks in New York state. Since then sporadic outbreaks have been documented in commercial operations or park waterfowl. Most outbreaks occur during Apr, May, and June.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nAnseriforms of all ages can be affected. Highly susceptible species include blue-winged teals (<em>Anas discors<\/em>), wood ducks (<em>Aix sponsa<\/em>), and redheads (<em>Aythya americana<\/em>). The incidence of duck virus enteritis (DVE) is also higher in Muscovy ducks (<em>Cairina moschata<\/em>), Canada geese (<em>Branta canadensis<\/em>), and Northern pintails (<em>Anas acuta<\/em>). Outbreaks can occur in both wild and captive populations, but is disease is relatively rare in free-ranging birds.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe herpesvirus that causes DVE is shed in feces and oral secretions. Transmission occurs primarily via ingestion of fecal-contaminated water sources. The virus can survive up to 60 days in water at 4\u00b0C  (39.2\u00b0F) or 30 days at room temperature.<br \/>\n\t<br \/>\nInfected birds can be asymptomatic. Clinical disease is usually acute in onset. Both clinical patients and asymptomatic carriers may possess ulcers or cheesy plaques beneath the tongue. Clinical signs can also include:\t<br \/>\n<ul><br \/>\n<li>Non-specific signs of illness<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Reluctance or inability to fly<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Extreme thirst<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Serous to hemorrhagic oculonasal discharge<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Bloody diarrhea<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Bloody discharge from the vent and bill<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Central nervous system signs<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Prolapsed penis<\/li><br \/>\n<li> Birds seek dark, dense cover (often described as photophobia)<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Death usually occurs within 24 hours<\/li><br \/>\n<\/ul><br \/>\n<br \/>\nAt necropsy birds are usually in good flesh. Although the severity of lesions can vary, gross lesions often include:<br \/>\n<ul><br \/>\n<li>Petechial or ecchymotic hemorrhages of the viscera, especially the liver and gastrointestinal tract<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Necrotic annular bands (ducks) or disc-shaped ulcers (geese) within the intestinal tract<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Tiny white foci of necrosis in the liver <\/li><br \/>\n<li>Diphtheritic plaques within the esophagus and cloaca<\/li><br \/>\n<\/ul><br \/>\n<br \/>\nA histopathologist will detect the presence of intranuclear inclusions. Necrosis is identified histologically in the liver, spleen, esophagus, and intestines. There will also be histologic evidence of gastrointestinal hemorrhage and necrosis. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nPresumptive diagnosis of DVE relies on the presence of consistent clinical signs and gross lesions. Definitive antemortem requires electron microscopy of fecal\/oral samples or viral isolation. The liver and spleen are the best tissues for culture.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nTreatment of the individual patient relies upon aggressive supportive care. Management of an entire flock usually relies upon culling affected birds and disinfecting the premises. Decontaminate the environment by chlorinating water and raising soil pH. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nControl\/prevention measures include: \t<br \/>\n<ul><br \/>\n<li>Quarantine new birds<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Prevent direct contact or water contact between domestic and wild populations<\/li>\t<br \/>\n<li>Mantain sanitation (most disinfectants are effective)<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Chlorination of water<\/li><br \/>\n<li>A modified live vaccine is available and can be used in the face of an outbreak<\/li><br \/>\n<\/ul><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-82 from cache --><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"amyloidosis\"><\/a><br \/>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-83\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-83\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<th class=\"column-1\">Box 3. Amyloidosis<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody class=\"row-striping\">\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Amyloidosis is common in captive waterfowl, but extremely rare in wild birds. In one survey of trumpeter swan (<em>Cygnus buccinator<\/em>) necropsies, amyloidosis was the primary disease process found. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nAmyloidosis includes a group of diseases characterized by the abnormal accumulation of amyloid proteins organized into beta-pleated sheets in various tissues. Most avian amyloidosis cases consist of reactive systemic amyloidosis with increased production of serum amyloid A proteins, a normal acute-phase reactant protein. The incidence of amyloidosis increases with chronic inflammatory conditions like pododermatitis, arthritis, and gout as well as aging and social stressors.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nAt necropsy, amyloid deposition is most prevalent in the liver, spleen, and kidney followed by the pancreas and adrenal gland. Affected tissues often appear pale, yellow-brown, firm, and enlarged.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-83 from cache --><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Non-specific signs of illness<\/h2>\n<p>Non-specific signs of illness frequently include weakness, lethargy, reluctance to fly, an unsteady gait, loss of appetite, and <a title=\"Fluffed and ruffled bird\" href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/presenting-problem-fluffed-ruffled-bird\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fluffed and ruffled feathers<\/a>. Failure to preen can lead to loss of plumage water repellency. There are a host of potential causes of non-specific signs of illness (Table 1). In addition to non-specific signs of illness, clinical signs can include bright green droppings or <a href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/evaluation-of-droppings\/#Biliverdinuria\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">biliverdinuria<\/a>, mucoid oral secretions, pallor, and variable neurological deficits, like leg paresis, ataxia, wing droop, and abnormal head position. Waterfowl, particularly Canada geese (<em>Branta canadensis<\/em>), may also exhibit subcutaneous edema of the head and eyelids.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Foreign body ingestion<\/strong> is a very common problem in waterfowl. Objects such as fish hooks, wire, fishing line, and gunshot are often incidental findings at necropsy but their presence can also be associated with morbidity and mortality.<\/p>\n<p>Potential causes of oropharyngeal plaques include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#duckplague\">Duck virus enteritis or duck plague<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#derzy\">Derzy\u2019s disease<\/a> (fibrous material beneath the tongue)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Rule-outs for diarrhea in waterfowl include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#fowlcholera\">Fowl cholera<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Avian tuberculosis<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/backyard-poultry-primer-2\/#Colibacillosis\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colibacillosis<\/a> (ducks)<\/li>\n<li>Enteritis, colitis caused by <em>Salmonella<\/em> spp. (most common in young birds)<\/li>\n<li>Intestinal coccidiosis (occasionally seen in young, wild or captive birds under crowded conditions)<\/li>\n<li>Acanthocephalans<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"acantho\"><\/a><br \/>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-84\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-84\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<th class=\"column-1\">Box 4. Thorny-headed worms use a hooked proboscis to attach to the intestinal tract setting off an intense inflammatory response. With heavy infestations, the resultant granulomatous, hemorrhagic enteritis leads to malnutrition, morbidity, and even death.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-84 from cache --><\/p>\n<p>The appearance of a waterfowl&#8217;s stool can sometimes provide a clue to the underlying cause of disease.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Green or bile-stained watery droppings:\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Heavy metal toxicity in birds\" href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/heavy-metal-poisoning-in-birds\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lead poisoning<\/a><\/li>\n<li>New duck disease (<em>P. anatipestifer<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Psittacosis in avian patients\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lafebervet.com\/avian-medicine-2\/general-avian-medicine\/psittacosis-in-avian-patients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Avian chlamydiosis<\/a> (domestic ducklings and goslings; rare in the United States but serious outbreaks have been seen in Europe)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>White diarrhea can be due to <a href=\"#derzy\">Derzy&#8217;s disease<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Profuse, occasionally bloody diarrhea, may be caused by <a href=\"#duckplague\">duck plague<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is possible for <a title=\"Newcastles's disease virus\" href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/backyard-poultry-primer-2\/#NDV\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Newcastle disease virus<\/a> to cause watery diarrhea, but most ducks and geese are resistant to clinical disease unless exposed to a virulent strain. It has been theorized that some waterfowl develop chronic infection and may serve as a reservoir of disease.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Emaciation<\/h2>\n<p>Potential causes of severe weight loss in waterfowl include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Heavymetal toxicity in birds\" href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/heavy-metal-poisoning-in-birds\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Heavy metal poisoning<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Pesticide poisoning<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Oil toxicosis<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Gastrointestinal parasites<\/strong>, such as the nematodes <em>Echinuria uncinata<\/em> (common proventricular worm), <em>Capillaria contorta<\/em>, which causes thickening and necrosis of the esophagus, and <em>Amidostomum sp.<\/em> (ventricular worms)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#coccidiosis\"><strong>Renal coccidiosis<\/strong><\/a> (young birds)<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Fungal disease\" href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/fungal-disease-in-avian-patients\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aspergillosis<\/a> (young birds)<\/li>\n<li>Avian tuberculosis<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/backyard-poultry-primer-2\/#Colibacillosis\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colibacillosis<\/a> (ducks)<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Psittacosis in avian patients\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lafebervet.com\/avian-medicine-2\/general-avian-medicine\/psittacosis-in-avian-patients\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Avian chlamydiosis<\/a> (domestic ducklings and goslings; rare in the United States but serious outbreaks have been seen in Europe)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Diseases of the juvenile bird<\/h2>\n<p>Important diseases of <a title=\"Physical Examination of the Chick\" href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/physical-examination-of-the-chick\/\">juvenile<\/a> waterfowl include <strong>angel wing<\/strong> and <strong>renal coccidiosis<\/strong> caused by <em>Eimeria truncata<\/em> (Fig 2). Important viral diseases include <a href=\"#hepatitis\">duck virus hepatitis<\/a> (affecting ducklings less than 1-2 weeks of age) as well as <a href=\"#derzy\">Derzy&#8217;s disease<\/a> (goslings less than 4-6 weeks). Additional conditions may include yolk sacculitis or omphalitis caused by Gram-negative bacterial overgrowth (e.g. <em>E. coli<\/em> or <em>Salmonella<\/em> spp.), <em>Actinobacillus<\/em> infection, and <a href=\"#newduck\">duck septicemia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"coccidiosis\"><\/a><br \/>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-85\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-85\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<th class=\"column-1\">Box 5. Renal Coccidiosis<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Renal coccidiosis caused by <em>Eimeria truncata<\/em> is a serious disease in domestic ducks and geese. Infection is subclinical in adult birds, but can cause heavy mortality in ducklings and goslings. Flocks housed in crowded surroundings with poor sanitation are at increased risk. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nPale, swollen kidneys with multifocal white lesions may be found at necropsy. Oocysts can be identified on renal impression smears and on histopathologic exam. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nSulfonamides are the treatment of choice. Control and prevention relies upon strict sanitation and disinfection. It is also helpful to house juvenile birds separate from adults.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-85 from cache --><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"wing\"><\/a><br \/>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-86\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-86\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<th class=\"column-1\">Box 6. Angel Wing<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Angel wing is a conformational abnormality of the wing known by many terms including \u201cairplane wing\u201d and \u201coar wing\u201d.  Angel wing is classically seen in large, juvenile waterfowl as the weight of the growing flight feathers causes the weak muscles of the carpus to rotate the wing outward at the level of the carpus (Fig 2).<br \/>\n<br \/>\nKnown underlying causes include: <br \/>\n<ul><br \/>\n<li>Overfeeding excess energy<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Heredity<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Malnutrition such as deficiencies in manganese, vitamin D3, and vitamin E <\/li><br \/>\n<\/ul><br \/>\nThe incidence of angel wing decreases when young, growing birds are allowed to swim and dive. Birds usually become infected by inhalation of <em>A. fumigatus<\/em> spores in moldy or decaying organic matter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Lameness<\/h2>\n<p>Important causes of lameness include septic arthritis and pododermatitis. Pododermatitis or &#8220;bumblefoot&#8221; frequently occurs in large-bodied birds such as swans housed on hard, rough surfaces. Obesity and lack of access to swimming facilities can predispose birds to bumblefoot. Most lesions occur on metatarsal pads. Septic arthritis may be caused by <em>Salmonella<\/em> spp., especially in young birds, and <em>Mycoplasma synoviae<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"myco\"><\/a><br \/>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-87\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-87\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<th class=\"column-1\">Box 7. Mycoplasma synoviae<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><em>Mycoplasma synoviae<\/em> most commonly causes swelling of the hock joint or footpad.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nA presumptive antemortem diagnosis is based on consistent clinical signs and gross lesions. Definitive diagnosis requires culture or PCR testing. Gross necropsy findings include viscous to caseous exudate within joints and tendon sheaths. Lesions can extend into musculature and air sacs in advanced disease. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nAntimicrobials used against <em>Mycoplasma<\/em> spp. may include tylosin, tetracyclines, lincomycin, and spectinomycin. Treatment does NOT eliminate <em>Mycoplasma<\/em> spp. from a flock. Surgical intervention may be necessary but the prognosis is guarded. It is also important to move the bird to softer ground or grass.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nPrevention of mycoplasmosis requires that stock be purchased from clean breeder flocks and that strict biosecurity is maintained.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-87 from cache --><\/p>\n<p>Other potential causes of lameness include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Perosis<\/strong> or medial luxation of the gastrocnemius tendon, enlargement of the hock, bending deformities of tarsal or tarsometatarsal bones<\/li>\n<li>Arthritis (degenerative joint disease)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/backyard-poultry-primer-2\/#Colibacillosis\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colibacillosis<\/a> (ducks)<\/li>\n<li>Articular gout<\/li>\n<li>Trauma (bite wound)<\/li>\n<li>(Avian tuberculosis)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Respiratory signs<\/h2>\n<p><a title=\"Reproductive emergencies\" href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/reproductive-emergencies\/#eyp\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Yolk peritonitis<\/strong><\/a> is an important cause of respiratory distress in geese. Owners often report a recent history of reproductive activity. Coelomic distension is a common physical exam finding. Delayed molt is also sometimes seen.<\/p>\n<p>Sinusitis caused by <a title=\"Mycopplasma gallisepticum\" href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/backyard-poultry-primer-2\/#mycoplasmagallisepticum\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Mycoplasma gallisepticum<\/em><\/a> is an important reason for keeping ducks and chickens separate.<\/p>\n<p>There are a variety of other conditions that can cause respiratory signs in waterfowl:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#duckplague\">Duck plague<\/a> (dyspnea)<\/li>\n<li>Pox, wet or diphtheritic form (rare, only reported in a mute swan [<em><span class=\"LrzXr kno-fv wHYlTd z8gr9e\">Cygnus olor<\/span><\/em>])<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#flu\">Avian influenza<\/a> (rare sinusitis, domestic ducks seem more susceptible to clinical disease)<\/li>\n<li>Newcastle&#8217;s disease virus (rare, mild respiratory signs)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#fowlcholera\">Fowl cholera<\/a> (blood stained nasal d\/c, cyanosis)<\/li>\n<li>New duck disease (occasionally cough, tachypnea, sinusitis)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/backyard-poultry-primer-2\/#Colibacillosis\">Colibacillosis<\/a> (ducks)<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Psittacosis in avian patients\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lafebervet.com\/avian-medicine-2\/general-avian-medicine\/psittacosis-in-avian-patients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Avian chlamydiosis<\/a> (sinusitis in domestic ducklings and goslings; rare in the United States but serious outbreaks have been seen in Europe)<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Fungal disease\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lafebervet.com\/avian-medicine-2\/general-avian-medicine\/fungal-disease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aspergillosis<\/a> (dyspnea in young birds)<\/li>\n<li>Hemoparasites:\u00a0 <em>Leucocytozoan simondi<\/em>, <em>Plasmodium<\/em> spp., <em>Hemoproteus nettionis<\/em> (dyspnea)<\/li>\n<li>Nasal leeches (<em>Theromyzon<\/em> spp.) puddle ducks and swans from northern climates are most susceptible; sneezing, heavy loads can be fatal<\/li>\n<li>Gape worms or tracheal worms (<em>Syngamus trachea<\/em> or <em>Cyathostoma<\/em> sp.) infrequently reported in waterfowl: young, captive birds are most susceptible<\/li>\n<li>Oil toxicosis<\/li>\n<li>Botulism (respiratory failure)<\/li>\n<li>Avian tuberculosis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"flu\"><\/a><br \/>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-88\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-88\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<th class=\"column-1\">Box 8. Avian Influenza<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Avian influenza is reported in a variety of bird species including ducks, geese, and swans.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe fecal-oral route most commonly transmits the orthomyxovirus causing avian influenza, although virus is also shed in respiratory and ocular secretions.<br \/>\nClassic signs of avian influenza can include acute death, respiratory signs like oculonasal discharge and sinusitis, decreased egg production, and occasionally neurological signs. Waterfowl infected with avian influenza are usually asymptomatic although domestic ducks seem more susceptible to clinical disease.\t<br \/>\n<br \/>\nWhen lesions are present, sinusitis is the most common gross necropsy finding in ducks. Additional necropsy lesions can include catarrhal tracheitis, air sacculitis, myocarditis, encephalitis, as well as hemorrhage or congestion in the brain, lung, and gastrointestinal tract.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nWaterfowl are considered a potential reservoir of avian influenza. Wild waterfowl and free-range commercial ducks are known to play an important role in the spread of disease. Virus can remain stable in lake water for over 200 days. Prevention and control of disease relies upon preventing exposure to wild birds.  For instance netting can be set up over pet duck areas.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-88 from cache --><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Neurologic disease<\/h2>\n<p>Important causes of neurologic signs in waterfowl include <a href=\"#box9\"><strong>botulism<\/strong><\/a>, <a title=\"Heavy metal toxicity in birds\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lafebervet.com\/avian-medicine-2\/avian-emergency-medicine\/heavy-metal-toxicity-in-birds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>lead poisoning<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>pesticide poisoning<\/strong>, and <strong>trauma<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Exposure to pesticides, such as organochlorines, can cause muscle fasciculations, convulsions, ataxia, and disorientation.<\/li>\n<li>Central nervous signs seen with <strong>lead poisoning<\/strong> can include weakness, drooped wings, erratic flying, leg paresis, ataxia, tremors, convulsions, partial to complete leg paresis, and blindness.<\/li>\n<li>Blunt force trauma to the head is another potential cause of neurologic deficits. The strong territorial nature of swans may increase the incidence of aggression and subsequent injury.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"botulism\"><\/a><br \/>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-89\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-89\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<th class=\"column-1\">Box 9. Botulism <\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Botulism, also known as \u201climberneck\u201d or alkali poisoning is caused by exotoxins produced by the Gram-positive, spore-forming anaerobic bacterium <em>Clostridium botulinum<\/em>.<br \/>\n<br \/>\n<em>Clostridium botulinum<\/em> grows best in shallow, alkaline water, especially that overlying limestone with a pH ranging from 5.7-6.2. The organism persists in spore form until environmental temperature reaches 77\u00b0F (25\u00b0C). Spores can persist in the environment for years, and are resistant to heat and drying.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nBotulism can occur in wild and captive waterfowl, galliforms, and many other bird species. The distribution of disease is worldwide. In the United States and Canada most outbreaks occur west of the Mississippi river. <br \/>\n<br \/>\n<em>Clostridium botulinum<\/em> reproduces and makes toxin within vegetation and dead invertebrates at the water\u2019s edge. Waterfowl then eat invertebrates and vegetation containing <em>C. botulinum<\/em> exotoxin type C. As waterfowl die, there is a subsequent build-up of fly populations and maggot production within vertebrate and invertebrate carcasses. The maggots concentrate toxin, and are then eaten by additional waterfowl creating a vicious cycle of biomagnification. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nMajor outbreaks are usually associated with summer heat. Environmental conditions that favor bacterial growth and toxin production include:<br \/>\n<ul><br \/>\n<li>Fluctuating water levels<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Rotting vegetation<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Anaerobic conditions<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Presence of vertebrate and invertebrate carcasses<\/li><br \/>\n<\/ul><br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe toxin affects peripheral nerves, and the clinical signs of botulism are dose-related ascending flaccid paralysis. Birds first exhibit leg paralysis, propelling themselves along with their wings. Paralysis then extends to the wings, nictitans, neck muscles and even the tongue. Birds often die by drowning or cardiopulmonary failure.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nThere are no gross or microscopic lesions in birds with botulism although the stomach is frequently empty. A presumptive diagnosis is based on history, clinical signs, and an absence of obvious gross lesions. Definitive diagnosis relies upon mouse bioassay testing in which botulinum serum is injected into mice. <br \/>\n\t\t\t<br \/>\nIndividual patients can be provided with aggressive supportive care. Gavage birds with charcoal slurry, <a href=\" http:\/\/www.lafebervet.com\/avian-medicine\/avian-nutrition\/tube-feeding\/\" title=\"Tube Feeding Birds\" target=\"_blank\">tube feed<\/a><br \/> as needed, while propping birds up or maintaining them in slings to prevent aspiration. Manage large flocks by providing easy access to fresh water, food, and shade. Up to 50% of 1-3 week old ducklings die, while the death rate is negligible in ducklings over 4-5 weeks. An exception to this rule of thumb is the Muscovy duck (<em>Cairina moschata<\/em>), which is particularly prone to DVH with high mortality rates up to 6 weeks of age.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nDisease is transmitted by the fecal\/oral route, aerosol, vertically, and via fomites. Survivors can excrete virus for up to 8 weeks post-infection. The clinical picture typically involves acute onset, rapid spread of clinical signs and death within 3-4 days.  Ducklings may display non-specific signs of illness such as lethargy and separation from the flock as well as central nervous system signs such as opisthotonus and ataxia. <br \/>\n\t\t<br \/>\nAntemortem diagnosis relies upon antibody titers. Gross necropsy findings often include hepatomegaly with punctate or ecchymotic hemorrhages. Occasional findings include splenomegaly and mottling of the kidneys. The most consistent histologic finding is severe hepatic necrosis. Additional diagnostic tests include  viral isolation and direct fluorescent antibody testing of the liver. <br \/>\n\t\t<br \/>\nManagement of DVH typically relies upon strict quarantine (8 weeks minimum) and supportive care. Intramuscular injections of DVH Type 1 antiserum have also been found to be effective in susceptible ducklings in the face of an outbreak. <br \/>\n\t<br \/>\nControl and prevention relies upon strict isolation of young ducklings and vaccination of breeder ducks and\/or vaccination of ducklings.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-90 from cache --><\/p>\n<p>When faced with a waterfowl suffering from presumptive neurologic disease, two additional rule-outs must be considered.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Capture myopathy, causing leg paralysis and death, has been described in large birds like the Canada goose.<\/li>\n<li>Unfortunately neurologic signs can also herald imminent death in waterfowl as terminal convulsions and opisthotonos occur with many disease processes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Ocular disease<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>New duck disease (<em>P. anatipestifer<\/em>): serous to purulent ocular discharge, conjunctivitis<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/backyard-poultry-primer-2\/#Colibacillosis\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colibacillosis<\/a> (ducks)<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Psittacosis in avian patients\" href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/avian-chlamydiosis\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Avian chlamydiosis<\/a>:\u00a0 conjunctivitis, tearing in domestic ducklings and goslings; rare in US but serious outbreaks have been seen in Europe<\/li>\n<li>Nasal leeches (<em>Theromyzon<\/em> spp.):\u00a0 conjunctivitis, corneal damage, even blindness; puddle ducks and swans in northern climates are most susceptible<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#duckplague\">Duck plague<\/a>:\u00a0 oculonasal discharge, conjunctivitis<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#derzy\">Derzy\u2019s disease<\/a>:\u00a0 oculonasal discharge, swollen eyelids, conjunctivitis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"derzy\"><\/a><br \/>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-91\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-91\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<th class=\"column-1\">Box 11. Derzy's Disease<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody class=\"row-striping\">\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Derzy\u2019s disease is caused by a highly resistant goose parvovirus that infects goslings (&lt; 4-6 weeks) and ducklings (&lt; 4 weeks). Derzy\u2019s disease affects all domestic goose breeds, Canada geese, and snow geese (<em>Chen caerulescens<\/em>) as well as Muscovy ducks. Disease is primarily seen in Europe and Asia. Prevention relies upon elimination of adult carrier geese and Muscovy ducks as well as vaccination of adult breeder birds. The virus is susceptible to bleach, stabilized chlorine dioxide, and glutaraldehyde.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-91 from cache --><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Dermatologic lesions<\/h2>\n<h3>Feather loss<\/h3>\n<p>The mating process in ducks frequently results in a bald neck on the female. Some breeds like Khaki Campbell drakes are particularly active and can cause significant feather loss when there is only one or two ducks per drake.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Frostbite<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Frostbite can be observed in species from tropical or subtropical regions like whistling ducks. Lesions begin as pale areas in webbing or on the <a href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/waterfowl-anatomy-physiology-a-dozen-key-facts\/#Reproductive_system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">knob<\/a> that can progress to dry gangrene.<\/p>\n<h3>Loss of waterproofing<\/h3>\n<p>Waterproofing of the plumage is maintained through careful and frequent preening. Anything that disrupts this process will interfere with waterproofing, leading to a soggy appearance known as &#8220;wet feather&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Common causes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lice leading to overpreening<\/li>\n<li>Chemical contamination (e.g., oil)<\/li>\n<li>Mold spores, particularly from willow trees, can fall on the plumage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Scratching at face<\/h3>\n<p>Nasal leeches (<em>Theromyzon<\/em> spp.) are a classic cause of head shaking and scratching at the face. Puddle ducks and swans in northern climates are particularly susceptible to infestation.<\/p>\n<p>Additional causes of dermatologic lesions include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Avipoxvirus, dry form:\u00a0 wart-like nodules on featherless areas, usually legs and feet (reported only occasionally in wild birds)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#derzy\">Derzy&#8217;s disease<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Erysipelas<\/li>\n<li>Fire ants<\/li>\n<li>Maggots<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a name=\"ery\"><\/a><br \/>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-92\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-92\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<th class=\"column-1\">Box 12. Erysipelas<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><em>Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae<\/em> is a small, Gram-positive facultative anaerobic bacillus resistant to many chemical and environmental factors. Erysipelas primarily affects turkey of all ages, but outbreaks have been reported in other fowl like ducks and geese.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nBacteria are introduced through breaks in the skin or mucosa. Contaminated soil or carrier birds may serve as sources of infection. Some outbreaks have been associated with poultry housed in areas previously occupied by swine and sheep.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nClinical signs include non-specific signs of illness, ataxia, skin lesions, and acute death. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nGross necropsy lesions consistent with septicemia can include: <br \/>\n<br \/>\n<ul><br \/>\n<li>Diffuse erythema<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Hemorrhages in pericardial fat and myocardium<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Petechial hemorrhages of abdominal fat<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Renomegaly<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Hepatomegaly<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Splenomegaly<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Vegetative endocarditis<\/li><br \/>\n<li>Fibrinopurulent exudate within joints, pericardium, etc.<\/li><br \/>\n<\/ul><br \/>\n<br \/>\nA presumptive diagnosis is supported by demonstrating beaded, pleomorphic, Gram-positive rod-shaped bacteria in smears of liver, spleen, heart blood, or bone marrow. Definitive diagnosis relies upon culture.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nEffective antimicrobials include first-generation beta-lactams or macrolide antibiotics like erythromycin  and azithromycin. Control relies upon cleaning and disinfection with 1-2% sodium hypochlorite.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-92 from cache --><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Prolapse of the phallus<\/h2>\n<p>Important differentials for prolapse of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lafeber.com\/vet\/waterfowl-anatomy-physiology-a-dozen-key-facts\/#phallus\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">phallus<\/a> include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Duck virus enteritis has been associated with prolapse of the phallus.<\/li>\n<li>Frostbite<\/li>\n<li>Excessive sexual stimulation<\/li>\n<li>Trauma, including over exuberant vent sexing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Prolapse of the duck penis is a common problem, particularly in light breeds like the Indian runner duck. Unless the problem is recognized early, the phallus ulcerates and becomes necrotic. Surgical amputation is often required.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Summary<\/h2>\n<p>Medical conditions commonly seen in captive waterfowl include pododermatitis, foreign body ingestion, toxicoses, nutritional disorders, exposure, and predator trauma. Unless captive populations are exposed to wild birds, the incidence of infectious disease is relatively low.
