Lifespan – Ask the Vet Nov 18

I’m sure this is a strange quesiton but do female birds have a shorter lifetime than malebirds? We have had 9 cockatiels over the past 5-6 years. 5 are male and 4 were female. Only 1 female is alive and well. The other 3 have passed through the years.

Answer:

Hi Kathy,

It’s an interesting question. Unfortunately not much is really known about parrot lifespans other than the larger the bird, the longer the lifespan tends to be. But there are so many factors like genetics, care, diet, and possibly gender and because they can live for so long, no formal studies have been done. Females that lay eggs are likely to have a shorter lifespan due to the strain on their system, but that’s just a theory.

Thank you for your question,

Brenda
