General Question

Online I saw a speciality bird store in Rochester new york. They give you health certificate and DNA test with the bird. The one problem is they are far away I am 5 hours away is that o.k. for the bird? Will the little bird get stressed? Is this a good speciality bird store?

This bird speciality store gives the bird a checkup before coming home also.

Answer:

Hi,

A store that specializes in pet birds is generally going to be a better place to find the right bird than a regular pet shop. However, we do not endorse any sellers, because we can’t stay up to date as to which ones are reputable.

A DNA certificate is always good to have because it’s good to know the sex of your pet bird. Knowing the sex and help when it comes to Veterinary care. A DNA certificate should have the bird’s leg band number so that you can verify that the certificate is for that bird. And it needs to come from a legitimate DNA testing site.

A health certificate is not a guarantee of good health. It is only a general visual exam – the Vet isn’t even required to touch the bird. The Vet only has to note that visually the bird looks healthy, eyes look clear, no nasal discharge, healthy feathers, etc. The bird could still have any of a number of viruses or diseases that can only be detected with blood tests. And without a fecal exam, there is no way to know if the bird has an infection. A guarantee should allow you a reasonable time frame – usually just a few days – to take the bird to an Avian Vet for a new bird exam.

Traveling several hours should be OK – make sure you have a travel cage or carrier, and have a light cover to put over it if the bird is scared. I would not recommend a cardboard box as a lovebird can chew through something like that in a matter of minutes. Some food and fruit is good for traveling because water tends to spill.
