Spotted dove

We’ve come home to find feathers scattered on our courtyard. And then little further along, the dead baby spotted dove. How could this have happened. Their nest as been in our hedge – did we do anything wrong. We used to feed the mum and dad

Answer:

Hi,

This is sad when it happens. It sounds like a cat or dog got into the nest. Often a cat will just play with a bird when they catch one. The trail of feathers definitely sounds like a cat playing with his prey. Doves also tend to make terribly flimsy nests. The chick may have fallen out of it and fluttered around until it died. There was nothing you could do. It’s nature and sometimes they do not make it.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,
