separating finches

I have 8 finches, equal with male/female. I started with 4 but there were babies… I’ve only had them for about 6 or 8 months and now want to rehome 4. Is there a problem with separating them? Should I keep all of one sex or do I have to rehome all of them?

Answer:

Hi,

Related bird should never be allowed to breed, so if you can’t tell the chicks from the parents, then you need to tell the new owners not to breed, or you should only give all females or all males. If you can tell which pair or pairs of unrelated birds are bonded, keep pairs together, but that does not mean you have to let them breed. If you do not want any breeding, do not give them a nest. A nest is only for during breeding – it is not needed for sleeping. They may still lay eggs on occasion, but the eggs can be discarded. Ideally do not separate a bonded pair that has bred, but, not breeding related birds is more important, so if you have to split up pairs and keep one sex, then do that.
