Broken feathers on tail

My bird cockatiel has broken his tail feathers as he kept falling in cage (wings are clipped and he is hand reared bird about 7months old) I didn’t pull feathers on they just broke off by themselves. What should I do about the broken off feathers still attached at the bottom of
the tail? Any help

Answer:

Hi Anna,

This happens a lot with young cockatiels. They are clumsy and tend to break their tail feathers even if the wings aren’t clipped. The broken feathers will molt naturally and new ones will grow in. Usually they go through their first adult molt around this age, so keep an eye out for the broken feathers on the cage floor. Once you see those, he will be growing in new tail feathers. But these will have a blood supply until they are grown in, so hopefully he won’t break any of them. If he does break one and is bleeding, the rest of the feather has to be pulled out to stop the bleeding.
