Hi Mahia,
I am sorry that this happened. Unfortunately this was a hard lesson for you, and tragic for the poor little bird. Wild birds are not pets. From what you describe, this little guy was in the process of fledging. This means he was learning to fly, and his parents would have been nearby watching over him and feeding him. Since you had to chase him, he probably was not hurt. You basically stole him from the wild where he belongs. I’m being honest, and I’m sorry if this hurts your feelings. But I want you to understand so you never do something like this again. Wild birds have specific diets, and very few eat fruit. Sparrows do not. He most likely died from starvation and stress. I’m going to give you a link to a video and website that tells you what to do if you find a wild bird or animal. In most cases, you should leave it where it is. If it is injured, you should take it to a wildlife center as soon as possible. You should never try to feed a wild bird you have found. Sadly, others have made the same mistakes you did. It’s also important to know that most wildlife is protected by Federal Law so it is illegal to interfere with wildlife unless you have the right license, and illegal to keep wildlife as pets. You can turn this into a positive experience by educating your friends and family.
