I am unsure about the gender of my finches, but recently one with a darker orange beak began sitting in the bird seed. Then the following few days the other had also started to sit in it as well.

You didn’t mention what species of finch you have. But you should not let them sit in the food bowls. They are trying to use it as a nest. So get some smaller cups to replace the larger ones. If you want to try to breed them, then you need to get an appropriate nest. If you do not want to breed them, then they do not need a nest.
