Zebra finches : Preparing the nest

We recently bought a pair of zebra finches and they are busy preparing a nest. The male is always busy working on the nest, and we have observed that he sometimes sits in there. I think the female does less in the preparation. Am I correct? Is this the habit of zebra finches?

Answer:

Hi,

With a lot of finch species, the male does most of the nest building and the female has to inspect and approve it. In the wild, sometimes the male will have to take several nests apart before he satisfies the female. Zebra finches prefer the woven hut style nests, attached high in the cage, usually in a corner, but with enough room for them to sit on top of it. Once nesting begins, the female will spend most of her time in the nest with the male sitting on top guarding her. He will sometimes join her, especially at night.
