Should I get another Cockatiel

Hi, I have a 22 year old male cockatiel that has always lived with other birds but due to being picked on by another bird I have put him in a separate cage on his own. I am wondering if I should get him a friend perhaps an older rescue Cockatiel but want to do what’s best for him and not sure if it is a good idea. Thank you so much.

Answer:

Hi,

At his age, it might be hard to pair him with another bird, even an older one. You might end up with two older birds that don’t fit in and each need their own cage. The other birds may sense he is getting older and not as strong or robust and that’s why they picked on him. A sick or weak bird is a danger to a flock in the wild and will usually be driven away or left behind. Maybe get him a mirror and see what he thinks.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
