Goffin cockatoo

I have had my lovely Goffin for 41 years, I have no idea how old he was when I saved him from a pet shop but they said he was young. I am now 80 and thinking I must make provision for him in my Will. He flies free most days for a couple of hours, he has an aviary in the garden which he flies to when he has had enough. He also flies back to the house in the evening to his big cage in the utility room I am his friend, he doesn’t really like other people. Would it be kinder to leave provision for him to be put to sleep rather than try to re home him? And if so where? I don’t know anyone who would give him the freedom he has here and he would hate to be in a cage. I would appreciate your opinion. Thanks

Answer:

Hi,

I actually have a Goffin’s that I’ve had for as long as you have had yours. Your bird is most likely an imported bird like mine is. The best thing to do is get in contact with sanctuaries. The Gabriel Foundation is a very good one for making arrangements with to care for your bird when you no longer can. Please do not choose euthanasia. And actually, most Vets will refuse to euthanize a healthy animal. Goffin’s are very resilient, and he can be just as happy in a new home when the time comes. I know we want to believe nobody else can give the same level of care, but this is not true and not fair to the bird. We do have a webinar coming up that will cover this type thing.
