Itchy skin in birds

Hi. I have a lovebird that suffers from itching in the areas where new feathers grow, and the new feathers come out pointed and I think it hurts him. Yesterday, one of the new feathers bled and I had to pluck it out because it kept bleeding without stopping. I want a treatment or ointment to put on his skin to relieve the itching and facilitate the growth of feathers in a faster and healthier way. Thank you.

Answer:

Hi,

All new feathers are soft when they come in, and have a blood flow. If a feather weas bleeding, then your bird broke it or chewed it. The best thing to do is take your bird to an Avian Vet to try to determine the cause of the feather destructive behavior. It’s not just from the feathers growing in. Since he likes the blood feathers, he may have a nutritional deficiency. He may have a skin infection. Never use ointment on a bird. Take him to a Vet rather than trying home remedies that are not going to work and could kill him. This is most likely going to be a long process, and possibly a lifelong issue. It’s very difficult to diagnose the cause of feather destructive behavior and to find a way to stop it. His feathers are growing in normally – there is some reason for him to destroy his own feathers.
