Balance trouble
Our Quaker parrot was out unsupervised for a short period while doing chores in another part of the house. Normally he sticks to his cage and play areas in the kitchen and it doesn’t appear that he got into anything he shouldn’t have (we’re very careful and conscientious about any potential dangers and basically bird proofed the house as much as possible). However when we got back to the room, he was less responsive and seems like something had happened–we think maybe he got scared and flew into a window or wall? He was having trouble balancing and was rocking like he couldn’t hold himself up properly. We took him to an emergency vet right away that sees birds and they examined him and took blood but didn’t find anything wrong; although they recommended a follow up visit with his regular avian vet (we went to the emergency vet because it was closer and we were initially worried that time was of the essence). It’s been a week and a half and he still isn’t back to his usual self. He can still fly but when he lands he almost face plants and still struggles to balance, sometimes seems a little wobbly. He can’t hold his food in one claw and eat like he used to because he can’t stand on one foot as well. He isn’t eating as much or playing as much as usual. And in the last few days he has started messing with the feathers on the edge of his wing–not plucking it out, but making the edge jagged and frayed. Are any of those symptoms consistent with maybe trauma of flying into something? Will he eventually get better and we just need to be patient or could he still be in danger and could there be something the vet didn’t catch? (Not trying to fault the vet; I know it can be hard to diagnose birds, but we’re just worried if we’re doing everything we can… I tried searching for similar questions but didn’t find much that matched his situation). Thank you for and ideas or suggestions!
