Thank you for reaching out to Ask Lafeber. It’s normal for a parakeet to stop sitting on eggs if they are no longer developing, as budgie eggs typically hatch within 18–23 days from the start of consistent incubation. If she has been on them for a few weeks and is now ignoring the nest, she has likely determined the eggs are infertile or non‑viable. You can safely remove the eggs once she has clearly abandoned them, or give her another day or two if she is still occasionally checking the nest. After removing the eggs, take away the nest box or nesting area to help prevent another clutch, and ensure she has 12 hours of darkness, a stable routine, and no nesting-type spaces in the cage. If she shows signs of illness—such as being fluffed, weak, straining, or laying repeatedly—a veterinary check is recommended.
