finch aviary

We have zebra finches in a large aviary that connects to a small one. If we remove the nests to give a breeding break, what should we set up for the birds t sleep in? They have some perches.

You can safely remove the nests to give your zebra finches a breeding break, as they do not need nests for sleeping outside of breeding. In place of nests, simply ensure your aviary has plenty of well-positioned perches, ideally at varying heights with the highest ones in a quiet, sheltered area, since finches prefer to roost up high at night. Natural branches of different diameters work especially well and provide comfort and foot health, and there should be enough space for all birds to roost without crowding. If needed, you can add open roosting platforms or some dense foliage to provide a sense of security, but avoid any enclosed spaces like nest boxes or huts, as these can trigger breeding behavior again. With a consistent light cycle and a calm environment, your finches will quickly adjust and settle onto the perches for sleeping.
