Are parakeets fragile birds?

I had a parakeet when I was young but have bought my grandson 2 and one died in 3 days and one died in 2 weeks. His parents are saying not another one as grandson was heartbroken. Any small bird that is heartier?

Answer:

Hi,

Parakeets are not fragile at all. I’m not sure the age of your grandson, but a bird is not a good idea as a gift. A young child is not responsible enough to take care of a bird. Birds need a lot of care and the right kind of nutrition. They are not an easy pet by any means. Pets really are not a good gift. This is something that should be discussed with the family, as well as research what kind of pet might be good for the child’s age. And regardless, an adult should be ultimately responsible for the pet’s care.
