Budgies

The dad of my pair flew away, will the mom and the eggs be okay even without the dad their.

Note: she has 2 eggs layes at the moment

Answer:

Hi Vanessa,

I’m sorry this has happened. Since there are only 2 eggs so far, they have not had time to start to develop. I would take the nest box away and discard those and any other eggs she lays. It’s too much work for her to do this alone. She is likely to die because she won’t leave the nest and eat enough. Or she won’t be able to keep caring for the eggs, or she won’t be able to feed the chicks on her own. It’s better to discard the eggs and maybe you can find her another mate in the future. If you do get another mate, it has to be an adult bird, around 2 years old. She will end up killing a young parakeet if you try to put one with her.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
