canaries

I have 3 males & 2 females in a large cage, 1 male& 1female are the parents of the other 2 males. The other female is from another pair. Can I put another female in the cage so they are evenly matched or is asking for trouble in mating season.

Answer:

Hi,

Birds do best when kept in even numbers, regardless of gender. For breeding, you only want one pair per cage. With a group cage, do not give them nests and you won’t have any breeding issues. They fight over nesting territory. If any do start sitting in a food bowl, remove the dish and use smaller cups. Basically keep any nesting items out of the cage and they should do fine and be happier if you add a female to even things up.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,
