Canary

Can I leave my canary alone for two days?

Answer:

Thanks for reaching out to Ask Lafeber.

For most canaries, leaving them completely alone for two days is not recommended.

A canary needs:

  • Fresh food available at all times.
  • Clean water that won’t run out or become contaminated.
  • A safe indoor temperature.
  • Monitoring in case of illness, injury, or an accident with food or water containers.

If you must be away for 48 hours, many healthy adult canaries can be fine provided you prepare carefully:

  • Leave extra seed or pellets in multiple feeders.
  • Provide more than one water source.
  • Make sure the cage is secure and clean before you leave.
  • Avoid leaving fresh foods that can spoil.
  • Keep the bird indoors in a stable environment.
  • Ideally, have someone check on the bird at least once during your absence.

If your canary is young, elderly, ill, or currently molting, it’s better to arrange daily checks.

So the safest answer is: don’t leave a canary entirely unattended for two days if you can avoid it; having someone check on it is strongly recommended.
