Concerned

I am going away for two days. Will my canary be okay. I will leave plenty of food and fresh water.

Answer:

Thanks for reaching out to Ask Lafeber.  A healthy adult canary can generally be left alone for up to 48 hours, provided adequate preparation is done beforehand. Leaving plenty of food and fresh water is essential and already a great first step.

To ensure your bird remains safe and comfortable, it’s recommended to provide more than one water source in case one becomes dirty or is accidentally spilled. Fill the food feeder completely and consider placing a small amount of extra seed in the cage as a backup. Cleaning the cage prior to leaving will also help maintain a hygienic environment during your absence.

Make sure the cage is positioned in a stable environment with a consistent temperature, away from drafts, direct sunlight, or sudden temperature fluctuations. It’s also best to avoid introducing any new toys or changes to the cage setup just before you leave, as unfamiliar items can cause stress or potential injury.

If possible, arranging for someone to briefly check in on your canary during your absence can provide extra peace of mind. This is especially important if your bird is elderly or has any health concerns.

With these precautions in place, most canaries will be perfectly fine for a two-day period.
