Finches

I Recently got four little finches, I Was given a little hut with them I thought to sleep. they look so cute together. I’ve had them now for about a month and now I have four eggs. I don’t want more babies because the cage is too small for that many birds I don’t want to kill the babies either if I take the little away what do I do with the eggs, please help!

Answer:

Hi,

You can’t breed birds with more than one pair in the cage, so the best thing to do is remove the nest and discard the eggs. They may not even be fertile. But what is likely to happen is one of the birds that is not the nesting pair will raid the nest and destroy the eggs, or kill any chicks if they hatch. So you either need to remove the extra 2 birds, or remove the nest and eggs. Since you do not want to breed, the best option is to remove the nest and eggs, and of course do not give them another nest. Birds do not need a nest or anything else to sleep in. Wild birds only use a nest during breeding season. Captive birds will sleep in a nest because they have it there, but then they end up breeding and using it as a nest. So it’s best never to provide a nest to non-breeding birds. Even if you let them breed, you have to remove the nest after each clutch or they will breed over and over until the hen dies from laying too many eggs.
