Head Shaking

I’ve never seen my bird do this before, and he was violently shaking his head and stuff was flying out of his mouth, he didn’t seem to be vomiting, he possibly looks like he was choking. But he Didn’t look like he was struggling. He just was shaking his head and things were flicking out of his mouth or ears I don’t know? It just looked like chewed up food. He went about acting normal after that. But I’ve never seen him violently shake his head like that before before. Is he OK?

Answer:

Hi,

Since he was normal afterwards, this sounds like regurgitating due to hormones, which is very common. Just before they do the head shaking, you will notice some head bobbing when he pulls some food up from his crop. He would then feed his mate or chicks. Some single birds will feed a toy or a perch, or even their own foot. However, if he shows any signs of not feeling well, or if you are concerned he is sick, then you should consult with your Avian Vet.
