How to create a bird-safe room

I have a pair of lovebirds living in a fairly roomy cage, and I know it’s important to let them out regularly for exercise and mental stimulation. I have several plants, which I cover up as much as possible when I let the birds out. However, my female lovebird always finds a way to get to a plant, and commence destroying. I love my plants and I don’t want to get rid of them. I love my birds and want them to be happy and healthy. I was thinking of converting the bathroom into a bird recreation room and removing the plants in there (an acceptable compromise). But a bathroom must be cleaned, and I use cleaning products. Would it be safe to let them out there, a day or two after having cleaned? I worry about residual products they might come into contact with. Thanks for your advice!

Answer:

Hi,

The safest thing to clean with around pets is white vinegar and baking soda. Vinegar can be used as a spray cleaner. If you have tough stains on the floor or a rug, you can sprinkle the area with baking soda and then add vinegar – instant foam cleaner. If you use any other cleaners, then you need to give the room time to air out. You also need to rinse off all residue from cleaners, except vinegar doesn’t need to be rinsed.
