Injured goose

We have an injured goose( dog attack). She is very alert, eating , drinking and using the bathroom great but is unable to stand, her legs to not work at all and doesn’t seem to have any feeling in her feet. She can move her neck, wings and even wags her tail and hen she sees me but no movement in legs.

Answer:

Hi Kristin,

The best thing to do is take her to an avian vet as soon as possible. The sooner she can be started on anti-inflammatories, the better her chance of recovering. She also needs antibiotics of there were any wounds. Dogs are not as bad as cats when it comes to bacteria, but they can still pass some along that could kill her. Birds have an amazing ability to heal from spinal injuries, but it depends on how severe it is and how soon she gets treatment. Unfortunately a goose is such a heavy bodied bird, she is not likely to have a good qualify of life if she can’t recover some movement. But don’t make the decision too quickly. In some cases, you start to see some improvement in the first couple of weeks, but it can take longer for some birds. If she hasn’t improved at all within 6 months, then you may have to make the difficult decision to have her humanely euthanized. For now, just take it one day at a time. But to give her the best fighting chance, please get her to a Vet right away.

Take care,

Brenda
