Long nails

My canary has long nails. Does not seem to bother her. Should I be concerned?

Thank you for reaching out to Asl Lafeber.

Yes, there is somewhat of a concern when a birds nails grow too long.  First of all, it can disrupt the way the bird sits on its perch.  Eventually it can cause sores or calicoes on the bottom of the feet and eventually cause the toes to become misshaped.
The greater concern is that when a bird’s beak or nails start to grow rapidly, it can indicate a problem with liver function.  On larger birds it’s simple to do a safe blood draw and get enough blood to test the liver and other organs.  But with bird as small as a canary it’s difficult to get enough blood to test.  However, I suggest taking this bird to an experienced avian veterinarian to have an exam and have the nails trimmed.  In many cases, the vet will show the owner how to safely trim the nails at home.  It’s not a difficult procedure but since this bird’s nails have grown so long, it’s best to have a vet do it this time.  If the bird has dark nails, it’s not as easy to determine where the blood supply is in the nail, and if they are cut too short, they can bleed and cause unnecessary discomfort for the bird.  If the nails are white, then it’s easier to see where the blood supply is.  While the vet is examining this bird, they can often give diet options to help support the bird’s overall health.
This is something I suggest doing right away if at all possible. If I can assist you any further, please reach out.
