Lost Bird

I just acquired two White ring neck Doves. I was really enjoying them

My female White Ringed Neck Dove flew out of her cage when I was feeding them. I have a male as well. She came back an hour later and I tried to catch her, but she flew away. I played cooing sounds on my phone, but she didn’t come back. Help!! What should I do? I just got them a week ago and I am a novice.

Answer:

Hi Elaine,

She still may come back if the mate calls. You can try having an extra cage with food in it, and if she goes inside it, go close the door. If she doesn’t come back, you can try getting another female. But I would first find a way to have the cage where they can’t get out while you feed them. Most outside birds in cages, are in a second enclosure unless it is a walk-in type aviary. In that case, there is an entry that closes before you open the aviary door. There are a lot of predators outside that will try to get the birds, so having the cage inside a cage or enclosure can help protect them. Everything from rats, raccoons, snakes and cats will prey on caged birds.
