Hi,
It sounds like they may not be fertile, however, leave the eggs with the parents and let them decide when to abandon the eggs. It’s good practice for them, and if you take the eggs away, this can cause a bad habit of them leaving eggs after a few days, which means they will never be good breeders. Both birds should be at least 2 years old. It’s not unusual for a first clutch to be infertile, but it’s more likely with birds that are allowed to breed too soon. Each clutch counts as a clutch whether the eggs hatch or not. What this means is that as soon as they are done with these eggs, you need to remove the nest box and rest the pair for 6 months. Or if they do hatch, remove the box after the chicks leave the nest. Forming and laying eggs is hard on the female, and in the wild, they only breed once a year. In captivity, they will breed year round, so it is your responsibility to limit how much they breed to keep both birds healthy. Don’t be too disappointed this time – again, first clutches usually fail but the parents at least get some practice.
Thank you for asking Lafeber,
Brenda
