Lovebird killed baby, what should I do about unhatched eggs?

Our lovebirds layed eggs a few weeks ago. 2 hatched yesterday, but unfortunately 1 didn’t look so healthy and died. The other one seemed perfectly healthy, but today our male bird took him out of the nest box and killed him. We still have unhatched eggs. What should I do with these? Do I need to remove them from him?

Answer:

Hi,

As you are finding out, some birds do not make good parents. You can try removing the male, but it’s hard on the female to try to feed chicks on her own. She may abandon them or get too worn out. Once this clutch is done, I would take down the box and not try to breed this pair again.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
