Taming a cockatiel

I had bought a pair of cockatiel yesterday…And they are 2 months old…That are not yet tamed…Is that easy to tame now?and if not wat will happen if they are not tamed?

Answer:

Hi Swetha,

If you want to try to tame these birds, then you can’t keep them in the same cage. When you cage two birds together, they will become bonded and will not want to be handled. Even if both birds are the same sex, they will still choose each other over a human – especially in your case since they were not hand raised. It is very difficult to tame a cockatiel if it wasn’t hand raised, but it is not impossible. However, you will need to have their wing feathers trimmed and separate the birds in different cages or you will not be likely to make any progress. You will need a lot of patience and nothing will happen overnight. This can take weeks or months, and in some cases, a bird just can’t be tamed in the way a hand raised bird is. I’ll give you a link to our website with articles on bird behavior and taming your bird, as well as other bird care tips. If you choose not to tame them and want to keep them in the same cage, the main issue that will come up is hormonal behavior. If they are a male and female, or two females, they will end up laying eggs at some point. If you have two males, they will be good companions for each other.
