Travel with bird

I’m going away for 5 days and taking my budgie with me. We are going in a taxi and he’ll be in in a travel bird cage. The journey is 2/1/2 hours. I can’t find anyone to look after him. Should I do it?

Answer:

Hi Rebecca,

Unless your little guy stresses out easily, it sounds like this will be a good plan. You certainly can’t leave him alone for that many days. Overnight is the longest a pet bird should be left, and even then it’s best to have someone check on him. Take a light cloth to cover the travel cage in case he gets scared. Make sure the travel cage is secure – put extra plastic ties on the door and anyplace the cage can come apart – even if he is clipped, you don’t want him to accidentally get out. Of course take plenty of his food. Water can be a concern, since tap water can be different, so if you are worried about the source, use bottled water while you are there – purified or spring, not distilled. Make sure he is welcome where you are going, and if there will be any pets or children, it’s best if he can be in a room where the door can be closed to keep him safe. Also be aware of the temperature – similar to what he is used to is the best. We have 2 great webinars on this topic that I recommend viewing before your trip.
