When to take away nest

Hi there,

I have recently gotten two society finches, one male and one female, and they have mated and are currently incubating a clutch of 6-7 eggs. I was just wondering when it is appropriate to take the nest away? I don’t want to do it too early, but this is my first time breeding birds and I want them to have the rest they need before attempting to have another clutch.

Answer:

Hi John,

I’m glad you are aware that you have to make the pair rest, as many owners think they can let them breed over and over again. You can remove the nest as soon as the chicks have left it. This lets the parents focus on weaning the chicks and of course helps discourage nesting again right away. Once the chicks are eating on their own, they need to be moved to another cage. And of course never let any related birds breed. If you give the chicks away, try not to give males and females to the same home. I know they are very hard to sex, so it can be best to only give one chick per home as suggest they get another at a pet shop or from a breeder.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
