Wing clipping & egg binding

I read somewhere that the same muscles used for flight were involved in egg expulsion and this was one reason wings should not be clipped. Is there any truth to this relationship? I have also been looking for a good muscle diagram with the muscles labelled. Thank-you

Answer:

Hi,

No, this would not be the same set of muscles. They use their breast muscle and muscles in the wings for flight. For egg laying, their reproductive track is what works to move the egg. However, breeding birds must not have clipped wings or they will not have the balance need to mate. And it is best not to clip pet bird wings because lack of exercise contributes to heart disease. In some cases a household is not safe for a flighted bird so unfortunately the bird has to be clipped. As for a diagram, I’m sorry but I do not have one, but you should be able to find one by doing a Google search. Or you might check out this webinar to see if Dr. Lamb shows one. I don’t remember .

Thank you for asking Lafeber,
