Parakeet making strange sound

My parakeet was rescued 6 years ago and has been happy and seemingly healthy for this time, has suddenly stopped chirping and singing. His behavior seems normal but he is making a noise as if a whistle or party favor is in his throat. I’m very worried. What should I do? He’s eating and pooping ok. Thank you,

Answer:

Hi Amy,

Sometimes senior parakeets and cockatiels seem to lose their voices or stop vocalizing the way they always have. If he seems fine otherwise, I would not worry about it. Parakeets do have a throaty sound they make. If you  have any concerns that he is sick, please take him to an Avian Vet as soon as possible.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
