Lovebird Trust

Hello! I have a Dutch Peach faced Lovebird that I have had for about 2 and a half years now (give or take) and I have a few behavior centered questions. Kiwi has been through quite a bit in his time. He’s survived Hurricane Harvey after escaping his previous home, got knocked over by a large dog on several occasions, and survived a daycare full of screaming little kids before the owner handed Kiwi over to my parents who later gifted it to me. Kiwi is my first bird and I understand the proper measures that must be taken to care for one. He has done well thus far but is still a bit on the hesitant side. He loves talking to me and we can hold conversation for hours on end. He does, however, not allow anyone to handle him or even allow himself to get close to anyone. The last time he was handled, they were met with a sharp and painful bite to the finger. What can I do to gain Kiwi’s trust in order for me to properly handle him?

Answer:

Hi Joann,

Adult lovebirds can rarely be hand tamed. The Dutch Blue mutations do tend to be more laid back than the normal peach faced, but still he may be as tame as he will ever get. He would be very hard to work with unless his wings are trimmed. If he was originally hand fed and tamed, then he might be tamed again. I’m not sure if he was found loose after the hurricane and if that was the case, he may have been a breeder bird. Not knowing his full background, all you can do is be patient with him and maybe he will come around. Here are some links including taming links that can help you,
