incubating of eggs
My cockatiel is not sitting on her eggs for the past 2 days and I’m worried. i checked on her eggs during this time n they are in good condition are not damaged. and i felt as if the pair wants to mate again. what should i do
Hi Jasmine,
If the eggs were left for a couple of days, then they are probably not good anymore. As I mentioned before, breeding pairs need a lot of privacy and having two pairs may be distracting. Again, I want to make sure you do not have them in the same cage. I would put a visual barrier between the two cages and take away the distraction of the other pair. If this is the first time these birds have bred, then they are still learning. Most of the time the first clutch will fail because of mistakes the parents make. There is nothing you can do but hope they figure out what to do. If the birds are too young or too old, this can be an issue. I know you said you bought two pairs, but were these young birds or pairs that have already had eggs before? If they were already breeders, they may not be good breeders and were sold for that reason. They need to be about 2 years old for breeding, so if they are younger, then this is the problem. Young pairs will often only want to mate but are not ready to settle down and take care of eggs and chicks. If these birds are too young, I would split them up until they are old enough. If you are sure they are old enough, then just wait and see what happens. If they don’t return to the eggs, and just want to mate, then take down the nest box for a few months and then try again. Some pairs take more than 2 attempts before they have any success with hatching eggs and feeding chicks. And some birds simply are not good breeders. Breeding birds takes a lot of patience on your end. All you can do is give them a chance to learn and you have to understand that eggs do not always mean you will get chicks. It is important that you rest them between each clutch of eggs, whether the eggs hatch or not. It isn’t good for the female’s health to keep laying eggs over and over without a few months break in between.
Thank you for asking Lafeber,
