Soft foods

Does the amount of time the soft food is in the cage, depend on the weather, humidity?

Answer:

We are sorry for the delay in replying to your questions from the Webinar What Should I Feed? Nutritionally Balanced Diets are For the Birds! Presented by Kara Burns. There was a death in Kara’s family and she understandably needed some personal time.

Hi Mary,

Yes – weather, cage husbandry, etc., can all play a role. Bacteria can start to grow in perishable foods in a couple of hours, or sooner during hot and/or humid weather. It is recommended to remove perishable food items within a half hour to an hour after serving them to your bird.

It is also recommended to offer cooked foods in the morning, and then remove the uneaten portion before you leave home for the day. You can offer homemade goodies again when you return home. During the day, offer your bird a nutritionally balanced base diet (such as pellets).

Thank you,

Kara Burns
