Love Bird not able to walk

Hi, I have a peach faced love bird who fell ill on 13th Jan. She was breathing heavily and was not able to walk. I gave her Melonex drops, Syrup enrofloxacin and a multi vitamin syrup for 7 days. Post which her breathing slowed down but she is unable to walk as her fingers are bent and she uses her beak to crawl even. she is unable to speak even.

Answer:

Hi Animesh,

I’m so sorry your little bird is so sick. It is very important to take a bird to an Avian Vet at the very first sign of illness. It’s not a good idea to give medication without knowing what is wrong. Whatever is going on, it is very serious. She could have an infection, or suffered an injury, or have an egg that didn’t pass, or a tumor or any of a number of different ailments. There is no way to know what is wrong without a diagnosis by a Vet, and the Vet will determine the best medications. When you medicate without knowing the illness, you can cause more harm to your bird. I don’t know if these medicines were left from another time, or maybe you are in a country where they are available without a prescription. In the US, a Vet must prescribe these medicines so that they are not misused. I wish we could help, but we can’t possibly guess what is wrong. Hopefully you are able to take her to a Vet as soon as possible.

Tale care,

Brenda
