Haloperidol0.1MG/0.1ML GEL

How effective is this drug to treat feather plucking by my Congo Grey ? Blood tests, full exams show nothing physicalogical. No changes in environment & routines. I’m unable to find information about the gel’s efficacy & possible side effects.

Answer:

Hi Deborah,

I think results are mixed. I know you have had tests run, but have they specifically tested for Avian Bornavirus? There is ongoing research about a possible connection with this and feather destructive behavior. You might ask your Vet about this and even do some research on avian bornavirus ganglioneuritis. If the plucking is only a behavioral issue, then a collar along with medications can be helpful. Unfortunately it is a frustrating condition to treat and most birds continue some form of plucking. We do have a free monthly Q&A webinar with Dr. Tom Tully, a board certified Avian Vet. This would be a good question to ask. I’ll post the link to our next episode, which is next week.
