Sitting in feeding Bowl

My female cockatiel is 4 months old and keeps sitting in her feeding bowl. I only got her 4 days ago. Is this normal?

Answer:

Hi Susan,

It can take a while for a new bird to feel safe in a new home. She’s a baby, in new surroundings, so the bowl might feel like when she was in a nest box. As long as she is eating well, and is a little bit active, she is probably fine. However if she is sleeping most of the time and doesn’t seem to be eating, then she may be sick and should be taken to an Avian Vet or back to the store or breeder. She should start to explore her cage and toys soon and start sitting on a perch instead of in the bowl.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
