Hyacinth macaw

What should you feed a hyacinth macaw other than macadamia nuts?

Answer:

Hi Ellie,

Macadamia nuts would only be one ingredient of a Hyacinth’s diet. They should have a nutritionally balanced pellet or our macaw foraging diets or both. In addition, it is believed that they need more fat than other species. Many owners feed extra nuts for this reason. If you are considering one of these birds, they are not easy to keep and maintain. They are capable of breaking any commercial macaw cage, even wrought iron. That along with the space they need and their diet makes them a hard to keep species. You would want to talk with breeders about the diet and care as well as your Avian Vet.

Thank you for asking Lafeber,

Brenda
